Challenge:

Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, has 10 schools that provide undergraduate, graduate, law and doctoral degrees to more than 8,000 students. When the university's Division of Information Technology (DoIT) needed to bridge two buildings for a LAN, it seemed easy enough — only 450 feet separated the buildings, making a wireless option the most appealing solution. The DoIT staff deployed WiFi , also known as 802.11b. But the system could only deliver a true 6 Mbps of throughput and was not sufficient for the needs of the university.

LightPointe Solution:

LightPointe's single-beam optical wireless system is license-free, immune from radio interference, and provides more than 10 times the promised bandwidth of the WiFi connectivity option. It delivers full-duplex 155 Mbps of bandwidth at distances up to 500 meters through the air via line-of-sight. LightPointe optical wireless products offer an affordable way to bridge LANs easily, while allowing the university's network room to grow.

LightPointe's optical wireless products are now at work in more than 60 countries, in 2,000-plus installations.

Sound Byte:

"Optical wireless is much better than the current WiFi solutions. Technically, it's a Layer 1 solution avoiding all the problems and limitations we've had with the WiFi bridges. Also, there is no extra packet processing elements in the way, making troubleshooting much easier. It is also a more easily and better scalable solution. On the financial side, optical wireless gives you more bandwidth for the buck."
