DRESDEN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

The Challenge:
Dresden, the cultural, political and administrative capital of the German state of Saxony, is also the location of The Dresden University of Technology founded in 1828. Each year, about 6,900 students enroll at the university and live in Dresden, primarily in student dormitories. Because the Internet has become an increasingly important educational resource, students at the various dormitories depended on radio connections to connect to the university's network. The problem? The 8-megabit bandwidth was not sufficient for the 196 computers connected to the network. They also had problems with the frequency on which the old radio antennas broadcast. Since an increasing number of users operated on that frequency, both sides encountered disturbances. The university's challenge was to provide a reliable, disturbance-free and affordable optical wireless connection providing high bandwidth between its two sites.
LightPointe Solution:
LightPointe was selected following an extensive search for a manufacturer that could meet the challenge and provide a disturbance-free and, most importantly, affordable optical wireless connection between the student network and the campus network over a distance of 1,700 meters.
LightPointe's FlightSpectrum™ 155/2000 provides up to 155 megabits of full-duplex bandwidth through the air at distances up to 2,000 meters. This optical wireless solution went into operation at the university in July of 2002, boosting the students' maximum bandwidth more than twelve-fold from 8 megabits to 100 megabits.
LightPointe's optical wireless products — based on the latest in free-space optics (FSO) technology — are now at work in more than 60 countries, in 2,000-plus installations.
Sound Byte:
"We had been operating a radio frequency (RF) connection for 5 years. We ended up having major problems with the low bandwidth and disturbances caused by other radio operators. The new LightPointe optical wireless link system solved both problems. The LightPointe system provides us with high bandwidth and is absolutely reliable. In fact, since we put the FlightSpectrum 155/2000 system into operation, our 180 members have been pleased with the new fast Internet connection," says Konrad.
